ELSA - Earth & Life Systems Alliance

ELSA Public launch, April 2nd 2008

The House of Commons saw a gathering of MPs, policy-makers and senior members of the national research community to celebrate the launch of ELSA, the Earth and Life Systems Alliance. A multi-million pound collaborative initiative between JIC and UEA, ELSA is focussed on pulling together life, earth and social sciences to tackle the issues of a changing environment.

Chaired by Norwich North MP Dr Ian Gibson, the launch event included a number of presentations but high level scientists confirming the need for a collaborative effort to tackle environmental change. Prof. Prof Bob Watson, Chief Scientific Adviser to DEFRA, explained the global challenges facing the planet, from the food / fuel land use debate, to the cultivation of hostile environments and availability of water. He pointed out how well placed ELSA is to help address some of these issues.

The three “pillars” of ELSA were then outlined in more detail by representatives of the Alliance. Prof. Caroline Dean (JIC) gave the overview of the Biodiversity and Adaptation pillar, while Prof Kerry Turner (ENV) described the activities within the agricultural transitions pillar, and Prof David Richardson (BIO) explained the background and future of the elemental cycles pillar. Presentations are available below.

Prof. Chris Rapley, Director of the Science Museum gave the keynote lecture, focussing on the value of collaboration and how ELSA’s multi-disciplinary approach can help unravel some of the massive challenges facing the human race. As former Director of the British Antarctic Survey, he brought a fresh perspective on the global challenges associated with environmental change, as well as socio-economic impact of climate change.

In response, Prof. Sir John Beringer commented on the value of ELSA for the UK and, crucially, how the social science element of ELSA would enable the life and earth sciences to be brought together in a helpful and meaningful way to benefit society.
